So, you’ve just finished your PADI Open Water Diver Course at Oceans 5 Gili Air. The course gave you your first taste of the underwater world, and maybe you’ve already explored some of the incredible dive sites around the Gili Islands—Shark Point, Hans Reef, or the famous Glenn Nusa wreck. You’ve dived up to 18 meters, as your certification allows, and you're hungry for more. You want to go deeper. You’re curious about what lies at 25 or even 30 meters. But you’re on a tight budget or a tight schedule—or both.
Here’s the good news: you don’t have to sign up for the full PADI Advanced Open Water Course just yet. There’s a simple, fast, and affordable way to dive deeper: the PADI Deep Adventure Dive.
What Is the PADI Deep Adventure Dive?
The PADI Deep Adventure Dive is a single training dive that allows certified Open Water divers to extend their depth limit from 18 meters to 30 meters—permanently.
It’s one of the five dives included in the PADI Advanced Open Water Course, but you don’t have to commit to the full course to do it. As long as you’ve completed your Open Water Diver certification, you’re eligible to take part in this dive.
It’s quick. It’s practical. It’s educational. And best of all? After completing it, you’ll be certified to dive to 30 meters for the rest of your life.
Why Choose the PADI Deep Adventure Dive?
There are plenty of reasons why divers choose to go deeper. Maybe you want to:
Explore wrecks that rest below 20 meters (like Glenn Nusa at 30 meters).
Dive walls and drop-offs where marine life thrives in deeper waters.
Experience the thrill of deep diving without committing to a longer course.
Build your confidence and expand your dive experience gradually.
Make the most of your dive vacation while you’re already in paradise.
But not everyone has the time or the budget to take a full 2–3 day Advanced Open Water Course. And that’s where the Deep Adventure Dive becomes the perfect stepping stone.
At Oceans 5 Gili Air, we understand that. That’s why we offer this dive as a standalone experience—without cutting corners on safety, knowledge, or enjoyment.
What’s Involved in the PADI Deep Adventure Dive?
Contrary to what you might think, you don’t just jump into the water and go deep. The Deep Adventure Dive is structured and meaningful. Here’s what your experience will look like at Oceans 5:
1. Knowledge Development
Before hitting the water, you’ll read the Deep Diving chapter in the PADI Adventures in Diving manual (or access it online via PADI eLearning). It’s just one chapter—no huge study time required.
Then, you’ll complete a short Knowledge Review based on the material. This ensures you understand:
The effects of pressure and nitrogen narcosis at depth.
How your air consumption changes.
Why monitoring your no-decompression limit (NDL) is more important at depth.
How depth affects color, light, and temperature.
How to plan and safely execute a deep dive.
The review doesn’t take long, and your instructor will go over it with you before the dive to make sure everything’s crystal clear.
2. Pre-Dive Briefing and Planning
Before the dive, your PADI Instructor will walk you through the objectives and safety protocols. You’ll plan the dive using depth limits, time, and air consumption considerations. You'll also get briefed on how to stay within your NDL and use your dive computer or depth gauge to monitor your limits.
This preparation helps you understand why deep diving is different—and how to enjoy it responsibly.
3. The Deep Adventure Dive: Your First Real Deep Dive
Now comes the fun part—diving deeper than 18 meters for the first time!
Accompanied by a trained instructor from Oceans 5, you’ll descend safely past 18 meters and go as deep as 30 meters, depending on conditions and the site.
During the dive, you’ll perform a few simple skills designed to teach you how depth affects:
Color: You'll compare colors on the surface with the same colors at 30 meters. Red turns brown, yellow fades—it's a fascinating demonstration of how water filters light.
Pressure effects: You’ll observe how objects like plastic bottles compress with depth.
Depth accuracy: You’ll compare two depth gauges or dive computers to learn how instrumentation can vary slightly—important knowledge for future dive planning.
You’ll also practice being more conservative with air usage and keeping a close eye on your NDL using your computer or dive tables. If you’ve never felt nitrogen narcosis before, this may be the dive where you get to understand what it’s like—and how to recognize and manage it.
All these experiences build your understanding and confidence.
4. Post-Dive Debriefing and Certification
After surfacing, you’ll review the dive with your instructor. You’ll discuss what you learned, how you felt, and any challenges you experienced.
Then, your instructor will sign off your logbook and provide you with an official record of completing the PADI Deep Adventure Dive.
Congratulations—you’re now certified to dive to 30 meters for life!

The Benefits of Being Certified to 30 Meters
So what’s the big deal about being able to dive deeper?
Quite a lot, actually. Here’s why the Deep Adventure Dive can be a game changer:
1. Access to More Dive Sites
Many world-class dive sites start below 18 meters. Some wrecks lie at 25–30 meters. Larger pelagic species and big schools of fish often hang out in deeper waters. With your new depth limit, you’ll be able to access:
Wreck dives that lie beyond Open Water limits.
Drift dives where currents sweep you into deeper channels.
Wall dives with coral and critters from surface to seabed.
You’ll suddenly be qualified for more dives on every dive trip you book.
2. Confidence and Competence
Deep diving isn’t just about going deeper—it’s about thinking like a more advanced diver. You’ll learn to monitor your air and depth more carefully, communicate better with your buddy, and appreciate the physiological effects of pressure and narcosis.
It’s a real confidence booster—and a good test of your personal limits.
3. A Stepping Stone to Advanced Certification
If you later decide to continue with your Advanced Open Water Course, your Deep Adventure Dive will already be done. That means you only need to complete four more adventure dives to get the full certification.
The Deep Adventure Dive is often considered the most challenging of the five AOW dives. So, knocking it out first makes your future training smoother and more manageable.
Time- and Budget-Friendly Dive Training
Let’s be honest: travel and diving already come with costs. Not everyone has the luxury of time or money to add a 3-day Advanced Course to their trip.
The Deep Adventure Dive:
Takes just a few hours out of your day.
Requires minimal theory (just one chapter and a short review).
Involves only one dive—so it’s cheaper.
Offers permanent depth certification to 30 meters.
For travelers on a short stay or backpackers watching their wallets, this is the smart way to grow your skills without overstretching.
A Real Example: Meet Julia
Let’s say Julia just completed her PADI Open Water Course at Oceans 5 Gili Air. She’s traveling through Indonesia and only has two more days on the island. She loves diving and wants to see the Glenn Nusa wreck, but it lies at 30 meters—too deep for her current certification.
She talks to one of the instructors, who suggests doing the Deep Adventure Dive. It fits her timeline, doesn’t break her budget, and opens up that 30-meter depth range.
Julia spends a couple of hours reviewing the chapter and goes on the dive with a small group the next morning. She learns about color loss, narcosis, and depth planning—and experiences a magical moment gliding along the wreck’s hull.
After the dive, her instructor signs her logbook, gives her a confirmation form, and now Julia is certified to dive up to 30 meters—for the rest of her diving life.
What Happens Next?
Once you’ve completed your PADI Deep Adventure Dive, you have options:
Continue fun diving to 30 meters at any dive center that accepts your Deep Adventure certification.
Build up your logbook with deep dives on future trips.
Come back to Oceans 5 Gili Air to complete your Advanced Open Water Course whenever you’re ready—we’ll remember your training and subtract the Deep Dive from the schedule.
Or simply enjoy the freedom of exploring more of the underwater world, one dive at a time.
Final Thoughts
You don’t have to commit to the full PADI Advanced Open Water Course to go deeper. At Oceans 5 Gili Air, we believe diving education should be accessible, flexible, and empowering.
The PADI Deep Adventure Dive is the ideal choice if:
You’ve just finished your Open Water Course.
You’re short on time.
You’re traveling on a budget.
You want to dive deeper—now and in the future.
With one dive, one chapter of theory, and one instructor-led experience, you’ll unlock a new level of diving that will enrich every future dive you do.
So why wait?
Let the Deep Adventure Dive be your next step into the blue.
